Monumental

Dateline: 9/7/2021

A key phase in Memorial Island's new World War I monument was competed with the topping off of the foundation for a bronze statue of the "Doughboy," a nickname for American soldiers that fought in the war from 1917 to its end in 1918. Taking a break from pouring cement are (from left) Brian Robertson, Billy Chapman, Michael Brady and Scott Simes, all with the Vero Beach Department of Public Works. Dedication of the 9-foot monument will take place during a Veterans Day ceremony on November 11. The WWI monument project was funded entirely by private donations and is being managed by members of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) and the Marine Corps League (MCL).
